WASTE IS ARESOURCE
At PANDORAProductionThailand, waste is seen as a
resource. In 2015, 83% of thewaste producedby our
crafting facilitieswas reused or recycled, an increase of 2%
comparedwith the already high percentage in2014. Our
wastemanagement procedureswere improvedwith the
helpof dedicated colleagues and environmental experts
fromMahidol University inThailand.
The crafting of our jewellery generates fourmain types
of processwaste: gypsum, glass, rubber andwax. The
gypsumderives from the jewellery casting process, the glass
frommaking ourMurano charms, the rubber from jewellery
moulds and thewax from the casting process. In 2015, we
reached100% recycling or re-use for all four categories.
All our gypsumwaste is recycled in the construction sector,
all ourMurano glasswaste is recycled into glass tiles, all
our rubber waste is used as fuel by the cement industry
and, finally, all our wax is used in the casting process of a
figurinemanufacturer. Some categories of wastewe sell,
other categorieswe pay to get recycled, as in the case of
gypsumwhere PANDORApays for the transportation to the
vendor.
It is a great pleasure to see our waste being transformed
into something useful. The benefits are twofold aswe
optimise theworld’s resourceswhile reducing our own
waste.
